Alice Brooks 5560, Vintage Crocheted Motif

Alice Brooks 5560, Vintage Crocheted Motif

For this post, let's go back 89 years ... all the way to Spring of 1936.  In newspapers, in various parts of the country, Alice Brooks Needlework Design pattern 5560 was offered in the Women's section.

Alice Brooks  Design 5560 was quite a popular pattern in this time period as evidenced by multiple newspaper promotions.   This pattern was offered several times over a two year time period.  The picture here is quite historic for the time period.  Here, the woman dressed up every day, even if the major plan was to crochet!   I'm sure this pattern would have also been offered under the Laura Wheeler, and possibly The American Weekly, brands as well, however, I've not yet identified the specific pattern numbers.

Notice that each newspaper description is different.  (I've processed several thousand patterns, and have never seen the same description used more than once.

This advertised pattern, as was the premise of all the Mail Order Designs, started with a newspaper advertisement.  The reader would then send away (for a nominal fee) and approximately two weeks later, the pattern would arrive.

The motif measures 5 inches, with suggested uses the usual tablecloth, bedspread, and scarfs.

This pattern is available in the shop, should you be interested.  There are, of course, many other motifs as well.
