Crochet Chair Set Pattern, Alice Brooks 5835

Crochet Scarfs, Chair Set:  These crocheted sets are made of unbleached crochet and knitting cotton. The pattern contains directions for making a Chair set, a davenport set and scarf ends worked in a simple mesh combined with crocheted squares; also instructions for the same pieces made entirely of crocheted squares.   The chair back measures 15 x 16" with arm rests at 6 x 13".  The individual squares are 4".  The set can also be made with the squares alone.  And, of course, other items can be created with the 4" squares. 

This is a Mail Oder Design pattern purchased through newspapers.  The pattern was marketed as Alice Brooks 5835 in 1937.  The newspaper description:  "Here's something new in crochet— a simple mesh combined with a border of squares. Easy to do, it gives you the opportunity of making not only a chair back but also a davenport set and a scarf to match. It just means widening or lengthening the mesh and then adding the border of squares. Use string or mercerized cotton for a quick effect. If you prefer you could of course ,just use the squares alone, repeated to the right size"

Materials:  

• Mercerized crochet and knitting cotton in (500 yard) skeins and a No. 10 steel crochet hook.
• 1 skein of cotton will make a chair set or 2 scarf ends. For a davenport set 2 skeins are required. If the set is made entirely of crocheted squares each square requires approximately 25 yards of cotton.
