This is a Mail Order Pattern purchased through newspapers and catalogs.  The pattern was marketed as No 267 by Needlework Bureau.  The delightful newspaper description:  "One hundred years ago a young lady crocheted a set of mats for hot dishes. She made them to use on her own table and they may even have formed part of her trousseau. We don't know. But, we do know, that they outlived the lady herself, and her daughter and are now the cherished possession of her grand daughter. We have copied them and written the directions so that you too can crochet mats to protect your own tables".
