In earlier years doilies were often named after places, events or flowers.  It is presumed this design Marlbourough was named for the town in MA.

No 7557 - Marlborough - Luncheon Set : This pattern gives directions to crochet the set pictured. The design, vintage 1942 from Spool Cotton, was named Marlborough, and is a 4 piece luncheon set. The crocheted set includes a centerpiece, 14 inches in diameter; 4 plate doilies, 11 inches in diameter; 4 bread and butter plate doilies, 7 ½ inches in diameter, and 4 glass doilies, 5 inches in diameter.

MATERIALS:   CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET, size 50: CLARK'S 0.N.T. – 11 balls of White or Ecru, or 14 balls of color, OR J. & P. COATS -7 balls of White or Ecru;   Steel crochet hook No. 13.
