Description

Picot Mesh Luncheon Doily:  This pattern gives directions to crochet the doily pictured.  Actual size of the doily is not indicated.  The pattern description:  Delicate yellow carpet warp is used to crochet this handsome luncheon doily in a picot mesh pattern. It is one of the easiest of the crochet jobs and works up in record time. When the doily is finished dip it in thick, hot starch, squeeze out and roll in cloth to absorb excess starch. Then stretch end pin right side down on ironing board, stretching outside loops to their limit. Press dry.

This is a Mail Order pattern purchased through newspaper advertisements and catalogs.  The pattern was marketed by Needlework Bureau as X-839.  It appeared in newspapers once per year between 1940 and 1947.   Three different cover photos were given.

MATERIALS REQUIRED: 3 skeins (700 yards) mercerized crochet cotton were used for the model. Carpet warp may also be used. For luncheon mats we suggest candlewick, string or any heavy weight crochet yarn. For the mercerized crochet cotton we used a 5 (American gauge) crochet hook. Select a hook right size to conveniently work the type of yarn you are using.
